How to Build Your Own Archery Target Stand

PVC pipes are one of the few materials that can be used to make an archery target stand.

An upside to using a PVC pipe is that it is inexpensive as it cost $40 to $50, and it is also easy to use. The following steps should guide you on how to make an archery target stand using PVC pipes.

Step One: Take accurate measurements

Using a tape measure, measure out the appropriate length for each part of your target stand and mark them.

You should measure out three pieces of 32-inch PVC for the front cross part of your archery target stand, then measure out four pieces of PVC 15 inches in length for the long upper front legs and two pieces 14 inches in length for the long lower front legs.

Measure out two pieces at 14 inches for the long back of your target stand used with the sanitary tee; measure out two pieces of PVC at 3 inches for the long back of your target stand. Then proceed to measure out two pieces of PVC 39 inches long for the angled rear.

Step Two: Make an outline or rough diagram.

It is easier for you to understand the whole process if you have a clear picture of what you are doing. For some, it may be easy to draw out an outline for this PVC archery target, while it may be difficult for others, so we have attached the outline of what your target stand should look like.

Step Three: Cutting out marked parts

Using a saw, carefully cut out the marked parts; you will want to follow the outline you made so that the measurement will still be accurate. And be sure to label them, so you don’t get confused on which one to use.

Step Four: Assembling the base

Four pieces of 32-inch pipe should be joined together using a sanitary tee, which means you will have four sanitary tees’ holding together a square. This square forms the base of your target stand.

Identify two sanitary tees on your base that you want to serve as the front support and the other two that will serve as the back support.

Step Five: Assemble the front part of your target stand

Attach two 14-inch pipes to the sanitary tees of your front support and attach two sanitary tees at the top of each 14-inch pipe.

Attach a 32-inch pipe to the two empty holes facing sideways on the 14-inch pipe, so now you have a 32-inch pipe that lies parallel to your 32-inch base.

Attach two 15-inch pipes to the empty spot on the sanitary tees standing on both sides of the 14-inch pipe, and then attach another sanitary tee to the top of the 15-inch pipe such that the point of intersection faces backward each side. Mark this sanitary tee, as it will come in handy when constructing your back support.

On the sanitary tees standing on both sides of the 15-inch pipe, attach two 13-inch pipes on both sides.

To the 13-inch pipes standing on both sanitary tees, attach a two-way sanitary tee on both sides such that the other end faces each other.

To the other end that faces each other, connect a 32-inch pipe parallel to the base pipe and the pipe above it.

So, in all, you have three pipes horizontally parallel to each other and three vertical pipes joined together by sanitary tees. This connection makes the front part of your target stand.

Step Six: assembling the back part of your target stand

On the two empty sanitary tees standing on the square base of your target stand (the back support), attach a 45-degree fitting to both sanitary tees.

Attach two 45-degree fitting t the marked sanitary tees (see the previous step). Attach a 39-inch pipe to the two empty ends of the 45-degree fitting on both sides of the base.

With all of this, your back support and the whole framework of your target stand is complete.

Step Seven: Fix your target

Make a hole on the four sides of your target. If there is none, pass strings through each hole and tie firmly, leaving the other end of the string empty.

Tie the other side of your strings to the bigger square situated at the front of the archery target stand. With that, you have concluded to make your archery target stand with PVC pipes.

However, a wooden stand looks more classic with an aesthetic feel. Adults and kids will more prefer a wooden target stand.

Other creative options for an archery stand include using a cardboard box stuffed with rags or stones and going back to old times; you can print out target circles and nail them to a tree.

Hardwood also weighs a lot and can withstand harsh weather conditions, whereas softwood can not. A wooden target frame will cost between $80 to $120. A PVC target stand is the cheapest as it weighs nothing and is easy to set up; it can cost from $15 to $50.
