Cornhole Court and Board Dimensions

Cornhole Court and Board Dimensions (Size and Distance)

People enjoy playing cornhole because it brings them together; no wonder its popularity is growing. With the summer gradually approaching, you might want cornhole to be your go-to -game of the season, which is great, but first, you will need to build one.

Cornhole court dimensions are 40 by 8 feet, while the board dimensions are 4 by 2 feet. But many people make their cornhole boards and courts using just any measurement of their choice.

The downside is that you might never really be able to play the game well on a standard court and board if you are used to playing using the wrong dimension.

So if you want the right dimension for your Cornhole board and court, we will say:” you are in the right place.”

The Elements of a Cornhole Court

There are a few elements that make the Cornhole game what it is, and they are: Here are the different elements that make up a regulation size cornhole court:

1. Cornhole board

Every cornhole comes with 2 cornhole boards, where you toss your cornhole bags to score points. These boards are placed at each end of the court.

2. Pitchers Box

This is the area from where players toss their cornhole bags. Every Cornhole court had 4 pitcher boxes placed on each end of the court on both sides of the boards.

3. Foul Line

As the name suggests, this is the line that players of the game cannot cross when tossing their bags, and it is the front edge of the board and the 2 pitcher boxes.

4. Cornhole Bags

The Cornhole bags are filled with 2 cups of feed corn for most professional play, but other bags are filled with other materials like plastic pellets.

5. Unmportant Cornhole Extras

There are a few other components of a Cornhole that are not quite essential, but they add value to you, the player, and make it more fun; they include:

6. LED Light Attachments

If you are playing into the late evenings when it’s getting dark, you will need this light attachment on your board to see the hole on the target even when it is dark. These attachments can be found online and in most sports stores.

7. Score Board

As you enjoy the game of cornhole, you must be able to keep track of the player’s scores, as this is one issue that usually arises. You can take care of this problem by getting a scoreboard or score tower that can be stuck in the ground near the game.

8. Carrying Bags

This helps for easy storage and transporting of your cornhole set, thereby making it easy for you to take the game wherever you want to have your fun time. Some cornhole sets come with carrying bags, though.

8. Wall Mount

Cornhole mounts help to keep your board out of the way because they can take up space on the ground, especially if you don’t have a lot of space for playing the game.

Setting Up The Cornhole Court

Before you set up the cornhole court, you must ensure the following:

1. You must have enough space for the court because they require a lot of space; you will need a rectangular play area that is 40 to 45 feet in length by 8 to 10 feet in width, except you will not be following the cornhole court standard dimension.

2. You must ensure that the land is flat or level so that no side is given an advantage as they play.

3. You must also have at least 12 feet of vertical space if you play the game indoors.

4. Ensure that there are no obstacles on the court that can hamper play. For instance, you don’t want a tree around the cornhole court.

5. The surface of the Cornhole board should not have any blemishes like dents, bumps, scratches, and anything that could interfere with the game.

Cornhole Court and Board Dimensions

1. Cornhole Court Dimension

  • The length of the court should be: 40 feet
  • While the width is: 8 feet

In the real sense, the length of a Cornhole court is 35 feet, but the extra 5 feet in the measurement is to make for space behind the 2 boards.

2. Pitcher’s Box Dimension

The pitcher box, which is also known as the throwing area, is the area from which players can throw their cornhole bag, and the dimension is:

  • Length: 4 feet
  • Width: 3 feet

Note that the inner edge should be right against the Cornhole board.

3. Foul Lines Dimension

The foul line is the distance between the board, and this space can be adjusted to fit the ages of the people playing.

  • For adults, the foul line should be 27 feet between the front of each board.
  • The foul line should be between 12 to 15 feet for younger players.
  • The length of the foul line should be 8 feet.

4. Cornhole board Dimensions

The Cornhole board is usually made of wood, even though other versions are plastic. However, for professional tournaments, only a wooden board will suffice.

  • The length of the board should be 48 inches.
  • The width should be 24 inches.
  • The hole in the center should be 6 inches in diameter.
  • The center of the hole should be 9 inches from the back of the board and 12 inches from the front.
  • The back of the board is elevated and is 12 inches off the ground, while the front of the board should be 4 inches high.

5. Cornhole Bag Dimensions

The Cornhole bag should be made of square fabrics that are 6.25 inches long and in width, while the seams should be 0. 25 inches.

The bag is filled with 2 cups of feed corn or all-weather pellets, and it should weigh 14 to 16 ounces.

How To Play Cornhole

The game of cornhole aims for players to toss their bags into the hole on the Cornhole board, and points are awarded if you successfully toss the bag through the hole or even close.

Since cornhole is a team game, the first thing to do in playing the game is to divide the players into 2 teams of 2 people each. However, if there are only 2 players, then it becomes a competition between 2 players, but in this case, the game will have to be played from the same board. However, for team play, the team members line up at opposite boards on the same side facing each other.

8 Cornhole bags of 2 different colors for the two teams are provided at the corner. A coin is flipped to determine who goes first, and the winner gets the first toss.

A player must take a toss from anywhere within the pitcher’s box, and players on one end take alternating turns until all 8 bags have been tossed. This ends one round of the game.

The team or player with the most point at the end of each round gets to make the first toss in the following round, but if the round ends in a tie, then the winner of the round before the last gets to make the first toss. The game continues until a team gets 21 or more points, in which case they have crowned the winners.

1. Scoring

Even though many people come up with their own scoring rules for cornhole, the standard Cornhole games are scored like these:

1 point is awarded if a player takes a toss and the bag lands on the board. This is known as “Woody.”

If a player takes a toss and the bag lands on the board but then slides or falls out of the board, the player still gets awarded a point.

3 points are given if a player can successfully take a toss that gets the bag through the hole in the board. This is known as a “Cornhole.” The player gets the maximum point even if the bag drops right into the hole or slides.

No point is scored if the bag does not land on the board but anywhere around the court.

2. Fouls That Can Be in Cornhole

There are a few issues that constitute an infringement in the game of cornhole for which points are not awarded even if the bag falls through the board or on the board, and they are:

1. If a Cornhole bag makes contact with or goes over the foul line in the course of play, even if it lands on the board or in the hole, no point is awarded because the bag is fouled.

2. A bag is also fouled if someone pitched outside the pitcher box or even overstepped it.

3. Another foul is if a player takes more than 20 seconds to pitch the bag, any points earned will not count.

4. It is considered a foul if a player doesn’t stay in the same lane to make a toss but uses a different pitcher box.

5. If a bag is tossed and lands on the ground, bounces, and then lands on the board, it is considered a foul, and no points will be awarded.

6. If a player takes a toss and the bag bounces off an obstacle like a rock, tree, and the likes and lands on the board, it is considered a foul.

7. Once the game is in play, you cannot take a bag off the board before it is scored, and if anyone touches the bag, they still forfeit their remaining bags, and only the ones already tossed are counted. The other team gets awarded 12 points.

How To Become Better In The Game

While cornhole is an easy game to learn and play, it takes a lot more effort to become something of a Pro in the game. These tips will help you get better at the game:

1. Make sure you are as comfortable as possible while playing the game. Take a natural stance like stepping forward with the opposite foot and then launching the bag with your dominant hand. But feel free to take a stand that suits you, like standing still or step throwing with their dominant side.

2. Don’t be too fast in aiming to get the bag through the hole, especially if you are an amateur. Your first goal will be learning to land the bag on the board first.

3. Don’t overthink your toss, or you will be anxious and take a bad toss; relax and try and enjoy the game.

4. Spinning your bag before you take a toss is important so that it can land where you want it to.

5. As an amateur Cornhole player, there are four shots that you should master, and they are: The slider, blocker, push, and air mail. The slider makes the bag land in the front of the board, about 6 inches from the hole. The second is the blocker, which drops your bag close to the hole to keep your opponent from getting theirs into the hole while using the sliding shot. You use the push shot to knock a blocker out of the way or nudge your bag into the hole. The air mail is the most exciting and difficult shot, which can send the bag straight into the hole.

6. Do a lot of practice, by yourself and with people who are better in the game than you.

Conclusion

Cornhole is an interesting and exciting game that will keep your adrenaline pumping. To get the best from the game, you must follow the standard dimension of the game so that you can play the game like it is meant to be played.
